Not long after leaving his longtime manager, actor Jake Gyllenhaal has left his longtime agency. He grew up, so to speak, at CAA as one of Kim Hodgert’s first clients. I’m assured his departure is not because of anything she has done. “He needed to make a change after 15 years. He has enormous respect for CAA.” He will now be repped by WME’s Patrick Whitesell.

Management 360′s Evelyn O’Neill tells me it’s a “very amicable parting” and she hopes he comes back since she and Jake Gyllenhaal go back such a long time — 8 years. “Sometimes people like change in their life. I think he’s amazing, I’m very proud of the work he did together, he was nominated for an Oscar, I want him back, and the door is always open. It is what it is.” I understand Gyllenhaal is not leaving for another manager and he’s not leaving his talent agency CAA.

FashionWeekDaily spoke with Jake at the Fall Harvest Dinner to discuss veggies, farmers and besties.

It’s a pleasure meeting you. You’re one of our favorite actors in the world.
That’s very nice of you!

Tell us about your involvement with the Edible Schoolyard.
I’ve been involved with them for a couple of years. I’m titled by Alice Waters, the ambassador of the school yard. I got involved because the dinner table was always a place, since I was a young child, where we got to get together, and I actually got to know my family there more than any other place in the world. I grew up growing my own food in our family garden. One of my best friends is a farmer. It’s been a primary focus of my life.

We love food!
I didn’t realize that I grew up in the slow food movement. I see children who didn’t know any of these things—that they can grow their own food and learn about vegetables when they are at a primary level. It was everything to me, so I wanted to be involved. Since knowing about this organization, I’ve done everything I can.

What’s your favorite vegetable?
I’d say right now, after an extensive search over the years and living the wonderful life that I’ve had so far, and after tasting many, many vegetables…cavolo nero. It’s like a really soft kale. You can eat it any form: cooked, raw…

We trust anything you say. Let’s backtrack…How do you know a farmer?
I was raised in Los Angeles, but I spent my summers, since I was born, in Martha’s Vineyard. My best friend, since we were little kids, lives there, and he’s a farmer. His whole family farms. I know it might seem odd, but it’s what I love more than anything. Being in gardens have been some of the most wonderful times of my life. Washing lettuce and watching things grow…you feel connected to the world. You’d be hard-pressed to find anything that connects you to the universe in the same way that planting a seed does.

That’s so sweet! And now you’ve got a beard like a real farmer.
Seeds of growth!

Jake Gyllenhaal has revealed that he enjoys working in the film industry, as he gets the opportunity to “tell stories” he cares about.

The 30-year-old has starred in over 15 movies since his mainstream debut in 2001′s Donnie Darko. His varied roles include cowboy Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain and crime author Robert Graysmith in Zodiac.

Gyllenhaal told OK! magazine that he prefers to choose characters that interest him and tell relevant stories.

“I’m in the business of playing characters. That’s what I’m in,” he explained. “That’s what I want to try and do.

“The ability to tell stories that you care about, it does give you a great opportunity to do that.”

Gyllenhaal and his sister Maggie were raised by father Stephen, a successful director and poet, and mother Naomi Foner, who is also a screenwriter.

“I didn’t grow up in a Hollywood way. I grew up in a family of people who made movies – and continue to do so to this day.”

Jake Gyllenhaal recently revealed a new bald haircut for his role in upcoming drama End of Watch.

The 30-year-old hunk has enjoyed a successful film career since shooting to fame in cult hit Donnie Darko in 2001, and has managed not to let fame go to his head.

Jake credits his down-to-earth nature to being mocked on film sets, which he thinks stops all actors from becoming big headed.

“Being on a movie set, there’s just no way you won’t end up a rounded kind of person as everybody gives each other sh*t all the time. That’s what makes movies,” he laughed to the British edition of OK! magazine.

One of Jake’s idols is George Clooney, primarily because the star has kept his feet firmly on the ground. According to Jake, it’s important for actors to consider the type of people they spend time with.

“If you surround yourself with the people who actually believe in the work that you do then it’s impossible to lose a sense of yourself,” he asserted.

“I admire somebody like George Clooney, who has people around him who are actually working in the field.”

Interview with Jake from the Digital Journal.

What made you interested in portraying Captain Colter Stevens in Source Code?

“I would have to say it was two things, the screenplay (by Ben Ripley), but mostly because of the director, Duncan Jones. Duncan made the most extraordinary movie with his debut film, Moon. I thought he and I would really work well together doing Source Code. And we did. Also, Duncan had this inherent trust in me, as an actor, and that felt good. I had weeks to work with someone as extraordinary as him, and it was like a godsend, you know. But I was also lucky to such a great character. He is someone I could look up to in participating in the Source Code program.”

Do actors ever need any decompression time to get back to normal after doing love scenes or even something like the incredible action scenes in the Source Code?

“Well, the making of any movie is always full of its own odd moments. When you do a serious scene where no one can’t stop laughing or there is an intense moment and you are supposed to break tables and chairs, and can’t get it right and you have to go and put everything back in — that’s what I love about making movies. So that’s just the great fun and irony of movies — that people are made to look like idiots! But who are extraordinary at their jobs? And you have like, these two actors in this movie, who are taking themselves way too seriously. I just wanted to give a great performance.”

In Source Code, the Captain begins to have a feelings for a woman that he believe he can save during one of the eight minutes missions. When you are doing a movie, is there ever any jealously between yourself and your significant other when either of you have to do really intimate scenes in your movies?

“Never. For us, it’s art, and we’re artists, so we understand.”

Do you consider yourself a fairly romantic guy? What makes a good romantic life?

“I think romance coincides with effort, so you can fall flat on your face as long as you’re making great effort in romance. Effort always comes off as romantic. If you’re someone who doesn’t cook, you make a meal. You can do anything that has a bit of vulnerability about it.”

What would you say is the most romantic gesture you’ve ever made?

“Well, I’m a little bit of a workaholic, so there was a time when I was working hard in another country with just one day off. I flew back from that country to see someone for just an hour and then I flew back. I thought it was a really romantic gesture and I ended up with a whole bunch of frequent flier miles for my show of love.”

Is it tougher doing love scenes, than it was doing an action sequence?

“It depends on the film. For in instance, in Love and Other Drugs, there were a few times I felt a little uncomfortable, mainly during the shots when I wasn’t wearing anything — I mean, nothing. (laughs) But, most of time, I was wearing sweat pants. In that case, the action in Source Code was probably tougher than a than the scene I did with Anne.”

Love and Other Drugs basically asks the question if two friends can be lovers without falling in love. Do you think it’s possible?

“Can friendship survive sex without feelings getting involved? I don’t know if that’s possible. I wouldn’t know? I haven’t been fortunate enough to try one of those relationships out. (laughs) You know, I really think that whomever you’re with as a partner does need to be your friend, too. All the really successful, happy relationships I know of feature two people who are together as friends, too. I don’t know if sex always has to have feelings, but friendship always does. If you’re friends you will have feelings of some sort.”

One of your most recent films, Brothers, had a war theme to it, and as country we were still sending more men to die in Afghanistan. Did it affect your performance in the Source Code? How do you feel about the war, in general?

“Well, do you want to talk about the movie, or do you want to talk about current politics? Because I hate hearing actors talk about politics! But if you want to hear me talk about politics, then we can have that discussion.”

Yes, I’d like to know how you feel about both.

“Well, to be honest, because I haven’t been, before this moment — to be clear! I would like to say that I think there’s a tendency for journalists to want to corner a movie like this into a certain…corner! And in this movie, it’s hard to separate the soldier, from the life that soldier lives, you know? Like if you see a man in uniform, then the movie is about war, And the movie is about a man getting to get back to the things he loves, in my opinion. I’ve made movies about war. So I feel like I can say that. And I’ve answered many, many questions about that before, you know? And how do I feel about what’s happening? I still have great faith in our president. And I believe that he’ll make the right choices. Look, it’s complicated. We are human beings. And soldiers are human beings. They have lives. And for me, I didn’t approach it like that. Because I didn’t play that part. I played a guy who’s in jail at the beginning of the movie. And to me, that’s an interesting aspect, politically. Which is actually a domestic issue. And I didn’t know that much about it, until I did research for the movie. I went to jails all around California, and juvenile halls. And I got involved in a writing program, as a result of doing research for this movie, with these young juveniles who write. I have relationships with some of them, and some of them have actually gone on to serve life sentences in some cases, And all of them, strangely, regardless of what has happened to them and their fate, are incredible kids. And to me, that’s also an important aspect of this movie. That here’s this guy who comes out of jail after he holds up a bank. And then he ultimately turns his life around. To care for two children, and to love, you know? And so it is with the thing about war, is that it outshines everything else. But to meet these kids that were in this system, where it seems impossible to redeem themselves — my life changed, making this movie, Because of that, because of meeting those kids.”

How did your time doing research in the prison system change your feelings, in terms of the research for the acting?

“I mean, you make movies, and so much is about this process now. You know, selling a movie. Or making it look good for an audience, or whatever. And the special moments that happen in movies, are the lessons that every movie has. Like for everybody involved in it. And I went through a journey in the prison system. But look, I don’t know how it can’t change your life when you meet a kid, who the day before was sentenced to life. And whose girlfriend had to testify against him. So I don’t know how you could be breathing, and not have something like that change your life. Like they get one hour outside a week, and they’re fourteen years old. It’s now changed to an hour a day, but it was an hour a week when I got there. That is not to say that they’ve done perfect things. But it is to say that it can’t not change my life. And another kid with the LA Conservation Corps started telling us all these stories, And they were unreal. To me. Like hiding meth in the back of a lamp of a four wheel drive vehicle, driving over the border. And he was sixteen years old. And he told these stories like he was Homer. They were literally like tales. But he’s changed his life. He’s actually working now in the governor’s office in Sacramento. So it’s those things. It’s like you look at a movie and go, yeah. It’s a movie. But that’s the stuff that I care about. So anyway. that’s all!”

Did the CGI effects for the Source Code often keep you on the set for long periods of times?

“Not at all. What really was exciting about doing the special effect scenes was that a lot of the times the day is set aside for you, alone or for just Vera. So, that would allow Duncan to shoot more than one scene. And, sometimes, I could shoot more than one scene than one. So, I have no complaints about the GCI.”

Bear Grylls, star of “Man vs. Wild,” has done plenty of challenging things during the nearly five-year run of the worst-case-scenario survival show. He ate a sheep’s eyeball. Drank his own urine. He even gave himself an enema in the middle of an ocean.

During the show’s sixth season — new episodes begin airing on Discovery on Monday night — the 37-year-old will not only continue to push himself, but one very pretty, high-profile actor: Jake Gyllenhaal. In an installment titled “Men vs. Wild,” Grylls takes Gyllenhaal to the Icelandic tundra. Unlike when he took Will Ferrell to the Arctic Circle, the weather is uncooperative: he and the “Love and Other Drugs” star brave 90 mph winds and individually pull themselves across a single rope suspended hundreds of feet over a deep ravine. (You can catch a glimpse of that scary stunt below.)

In next Sunday’s paper, we talk to Grylls about what to expect from rest of the new season. (Hint: It includes him crying.) What follows is an excerpt of that conversation, in which the outdoorsman discusses the challenges of shepherding an A-list actor through the wild.

How did you decide to ask Jake to be on the show?
Shara, my wife, saw him on some chat show, and he was asked what it is like to be famous. He said, “It’s great, and if the paparazzi get to me, I just ring up my buddy Bear Grylls.” And I go, I don’t even know him! So I emailed him and we started talking about going on a proper adventure. He was a fan of the show, and once we made the schedule work, we did it quite spontaneously.

Why did you choose to take him to Iceland? Were you looking for a location that might be easier for him to handle?
I thought Iceland would be good because there’s lots to do. I was like, “The weather will be cool and it should be pretty mellow. We’ll do a bit of climbing, and we’ll just kind of jump into it.” But he was thrown right in on the deep end. We did have some crazy conditions — some of the worst weather I’ve seen for years. The wind was so strong that they literally had a jumbo jet blown sideways at the airport. And there we were, 5,000 feet up on a mountain trying to get our backsides out of there in one piece. Jake was saying, “Where’s the relaxing chilling out in the wild?”

Is it more difficult for you when someone is tagging along for the journey?
I’m kind of a little bit more aware when I have someone else with me who’s more of a wilderness rookie. I’m always kind of nervous because I’m aware that somebody else is trusting me with their life.

I couldn’t believe that Jake decided to crawl across that rope. He was attached to you via a smaller rope tied around his waist — if he’d fallen, would that have saved him?
That wouldn’t have held him. That wasn’t a safety line — that was a helping line for him to balance. And if he ran out of puff, I could have helped him across with that. But I was pretty confident that he’d be OK. We worked out afterwards that it was the equivalent of doing 180 pull-ups.

He must have had to sign every kind of contract imaginable before coming on the show.
I always have to have kind of a weird conversation with these people’s insurance guys, where they ask me, “Can you guarantee us that these actors will be safe?” And I go, “Well, no. I can’t.” Then there’s a long pause on the other end of the telephone. But you can’t predict what’s going to happen in the wild — that’s what makes the show edgy. There’s a significant element of unpredictability out there, and I can look after him to my utmost ability, and my ability is OK.

Do you have a lot of Hollywood types approaching you wanting to be on the show in an attempt to prove their toughness?
A few people have asked to be on it. It’s nice for actors to do something where they’re not covered by safety ropes and helmets. There’s a thrill for them to be able to do stuff that is very real.

Overall, what did you think of Jake’s performance in the wild?
You’ve gotta admire somebody when they step out of their comfort zone and put their life in somebody else’s hands. I was very clear with him and said, ‘Come on your own and trust me.’ He did incredible. What I like about the wild is when you’re squeezed, you see what people are made of.

The Hollywood star appeared in the 1991 comedy as an 11-year-old, alongside Billy Crystal. The film went on to be a massive hit across the world, a fact that Jake attributes to his presence in the movie.

“I’m the reason that movie was a hit. It was all down to me,” he joked to Empire magazine, before adding, “You know, I do remember shooting a scene in the schoolroom, where Billy Crystal had a big speech. And I get up and say, ‘My dad’s Mitch and he’s a submarine commander.’ I must have said it a million times and I was so nervous. Which worked, I guess, for the scene.”

Jake has since gone on to forge a successful film career, but still remembers his first experience on a movie set. He recounts looking on in amazement at the professionalism of his more experienced co-star.

“But Billy had a three-page monologue, and I remember being, ‘Oh my God, how’s he saying all those words? He’s so amazing,” he added.
